Museum Hill

"It has been said that, at its best, preservation engages the past in a conversation with the present over a mutual concern for the future."

      - William Murtagh, first keeper of the National Register of Historic Places

History of Museum Hill

Following the Civil War; St. Joseph had an enterprise boom which resulted in amazing architectural and public development. The areas surrounding the central business district became popular residential enclaves, and Museum Hill benefited from that growth. Victorian Style-Single Family Residences were the prevalent style, with examples ranging from modest cottages to elaborate mansions. The Great Depression stagnated economic growth and many of these homes appeared lost to time. With a strong neighborhood association and a DIY attitude; these beautiful homes are coming back to life. The Museum Hill Neighborhood Association helps maintain and encourage further development.  Our goals are:

  • To foster community improvement
  • To encourage restoration and preservation of historic properties
  • To stabilize the community by fostering civic pride
